1. Define controllables
Preparation quality, practice, feedback, sleep, materials, timing, and communication are controllable. Rankings, competitor performance, evaluator preferences, and final decisions are not.
2. Create a pre-performance routine
Use the same short sequence before exams, interviews, competitions, or auditions to reduce last-minute decision load.
3. Practice uncertainty
Notice the urge to repeatedly check, compare, predict, or mentally rehearse rejection. Build periods where the outcome is intentionally not analyzed.
4. Prepare for multiple outcomes
A backup plan is not pessimism. It reduces the sense that one result determines the student's entire future.
5. Protect identity
Maintain relationships, interests, health, and roles that are not based on performance ranking.
6. Escalate if pressure becomes clinically significant
Severe anxiety, depression, panic, self-harm risk, eating problems, or major functional impairment require licensed professional care.
